Everything from the animations of the bosses, the audio and visual clues and the feel of the weapons can either make a game special or ruin it for everyone.
So, getting the option to trial one for free with PlayStation Plus at launch sounds like the ideal way to test drive a Souls-like without throwing down hard cash in advance. With Souls-like especially, it's not until you've picked up the controller and played around with the dodge/parry mechanics first until you realize if the game is a good fit for you.
