Sony Has Thrown In The Virtual Towel By Selling VR Patents To Meta

The long foretold end of the PSVR and its successor hardware might be at hand, as Sony has sold hundreds of VR patents to Meta, in a seeming shift away from the technology that was a hit back in the 2010s.

The PSVR was released during the PlayStation 4 era, being compatible with that system. VR was seeing a renaissance at that time, spearheaded by the Oculus Rift, and Sony got in on the action with a headset that was compatible with the PlayStation Move controllers, drastically reducing the barrier to entry for many people interested in exploring 3D spaces.

In 2023, Sony released the PSVR 2 for the PlayStation 5, but the company never seemed as invested in the tech as its predecessor. Sony may be moving away from the VR market completely, as ZDNET is reporting (as spotted by Push Square) that the owners of the PSVR 2 have sold 419 patents to Meta, including ones confirmed for ownership in the various countries.
