Meta has confirmed that the Oculus Quest 2 VR port of GTA: San Andreas has been "indefinitely" put on hold more than three years after it was first revealed.
Although most GTA fans have their sights solely set on GTA 6's release at some point in Fall 2025, that isn't the only release in the series that people have been looking forward to. While Rockstar has been toiling away for the last decade on the next mainline release, Meta has spent the last three years quietly working on a VR port of GTA: San Andreas for the Oculus Quest 2.
Games need to wind down in scope, not blow up to such unbelievable levels as to turn singleplayer games into ever-expanding live-service worlds.
That project was announced by Meta all the way back in late 2021 at Facebook Connect and, despite the reveal now showing any gameplay footage whatsoever, it was an exciting prospect considering how well it handled porting games like Resident Evil 4 to VR. Since then, we've heard literally nothing about it, although that's starting to make a bit more sense after a recent statement.
