Obsidian Studio Head Confirms Outer Worlds 2 Still In Development But Admits To Almost Throwing Project Out

In a new interview, Obsidian Entertainment studio head Feargus Urquhart confirmed a sequel to The Outer Worlds is still in development. However, it was reportedly almost abandoned.

The sequel, named The Outer Worlds 2 for the time being, was previously announced in 2021. In that announcement, details of the sequel were sparse, other than the sequel would take place in a different star system with a different crew.

In the new interview, Urquhart revealed the sequel was not always looking good. During the early years of the Covid pandemic, Obsidian developers considered canning the sequel to The Outer Worlds in favor of putting the team on development of Avowed.

The prospect of discarding the project came during a rocky period for Obsidian. Post-acquisition, the studio struggled to navigate what it meant to be an acquired studio, and how to juggle multiple projects.

Instead of discarding Outer Worlds 2 during this period, Obsidian decided to stay the course and embraced game release delays to ensure the games remained true to the original vision.
