Foamstars, a four-versus-four 'party shooter' from Toylogic, is going free-to-play on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 after October 4. Additionally, while a PlayStation Plus subscription was previously necessary to play Fomastars, this prerequisite has also been removed.
Foamstars was released in February but according to sources that track console player populations, Foamstars' player base fizzled out shortly after release (thanks, True Trophies). Square Enix will be giving players who paid for the game a 'Legacy Gift' as compensation.
The Legacy Gift will contain "12 exclusive colour-variant Bubble Beastie skins, 1 exclusive Slide Board design and the Legacy title." Foamstars is currently priced at $29.99, the price it was released at.
A Reddit thread regarding the switch to free-to-play has shown a positive reception to the idea. Players have become accustomed to publishers and developers shutting down live-service titles when player counts drop low enough, so Square Enix attempting something to revive the game is a pleasant surprise.
