Nintendo Loses Ownership of The Wonderful 101

Nintendo is a company known for many things. Sometimes they make video games, and other times, they really, honestly just don't. Nintendo has a massive archive of beloved IPs that collect a lot of dust. Recently, that list got a little bit shorter.

Platinum Games has acquired the legal rights to The Wonderful 101. It's already known that they had limited rights to the IP - enough to release The Wonderful 101 Remastered, but little else.

This deal turns those partial rights into full control. As discovered on Reddit, legal documents have already been filed and agreed on. The transfer of rights was documented on August 19th, and registered on September 9th.

It's not yet known if Platinum Games has plans of their own for the IP. But that's to be expected: they only gained ownership earlier this month, and game development is not a fast process. It's far too early for any announcements.

That said, it's hard to imagine them treating The Wonderful 101 like Nintendo did. Deals like these don't happen randomly. Odds are, Platinum Games has something special in mind. Only time will tell what that is, if anything.
