Metaphor: ReFantazio's review scores are in ahead of its launch on October 11, and it's one of Atlus' most critically acclaimed launches ever. Critics have specifically praised the game's "epic fantasy" worldbuilding and "expansive combat," earning Atlus' newest JRPG the highest possible badge of Mighty on OpenCritic, along with an average review score of 94. This ties the score of Persona 5 Royal, widely seen as being among the best games in the genre.
In our five-star review at TheGamer, executive editor Meg Pelliccio argues that Metaphor: ReFantazio may even surpass Persona, calling it "a new peak for Atlus." In her view, Metaphor has "refined" the best elements of Persona and thrown them into "an exciting fantasy setting with incredible lore, well-developed characters, and a fresh new battle system."
Legendary Japanese magazine Famitsu announced its review score last week. The magazine awarded Metaphor: ReFantazio a 37/40 using its four-reviewer method, meaning three reviewers gave it a 9/10 and one gave it a perfect score.
