Developer Studio Zero and publisher Atlus have announced that Metaphor: ReFantazio sales have already reached an impressive milestone, even though the game has only been out for a handful of hours.
Per a Japanese press release (for which we're using machine translation), physical shipments and digital sales of the game have already passed the one million mark, which is a pretty impressive point to be at this early in the game's life cycle.
Metaphor: ReFantazio also boasts the highest Steam concurrent player count of any Atlus game in history; the game is currently sitting at 60,103 players on Steam (at time of writing), which handily beats the publisher's next most popular game Persona 3 Reload (45,002).
In the press release, Atlus also points to Metaphor: ReFantazio's strong critical reception. The game is currently sitting at a 92% rating on OpenCritic, with 99% of aggregated critics awarding it a positive score.
Metaphor: ReFantazio's strong performance is especially impressive given that it's a completely new IP; though it shares similarities with the Persona series (including a publisher and several former developers), it's not an entry in that franchise, so its strong sales will likely be encouraging for Atlus.
