Pokemon GO players have been complaining about the extreme difficulty of the game's Max Raids, especially when they can't get a full party of 39 other players to join in. Max Raids in Pokemon GO make it possible to add massive Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon to players' rosters, but actually defeating and capturing them seems like an insurmountable task for many.
Pokemon Sword and Shield introduced Max Raids in its November 2019 launch, allowing groups of up to four players, or a combination of players and bots, to go to specific points and try to take down and capture Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon of various star ratings. Pokemon GO adopted a similar model for battling and catching giant Pokemon in September 2024 as part of its Max Out season, but publisher/developer Niantic upped the ante tenfold, allowing teams of up to 40 players to participate in a single Max Raid.
