Sonic X Shadow Generations might have finally let us know where Shadow was during the events of Sonic's campaign, but it still leaves Silver's whereabouts as a mystery.
Beyond finally letting Shadow have his own game after more than a decade of being benched (fair enough after Shadow the Hedgehog), the edgy ultimate lifeform finally has the spotlight in Sonic X Shadow Generations. Interestingly, Shadow's campaign actually takes place during the events of Sonic Generations, with the game opening as Shadow misses the birthday party to keep an eye on the ARK.
Sonic X Shadow Generations is a good remaster of a fan-favourite game, but it's Shadow's story that steals the show, acting as more of a remake.
This actually gives Shadow a very good reason for missing Sonic's surprise birthday party in Sonic Generations, instead of just suggesting that he couldn't be bothered to show up in the first place. That's a nice touch, but it sadly doesn't explain where the heck Silver was at the start of the game.
