Earlier this year, Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail introduced Wuk Lamat, played by trans actor Sena Bryer. Ever since the expansion launched, she has faced the brunt of transphobic abuse and death threats.

Square Enix has remained mostly silent on the abuse, but two days ago, FF14 director Naoki Yoshida (or Yoshi-P) finally spoke out about the harassment Bryer has been facing, saying that it "broke [his] heart". He even pleaded with the community to stop, asking them not to "direct personal attacks" at people who worked on the game.
Upon hearing this support, Bryer posted on Twitter, "I spent all of 2023 riddled with imposter syndrome, terrified I got recast (for reasons that in hindsight make no sense) so to hear Yoshi-P say these words and give this support fills me with joy. My Japanese is bad but someday I hope to meet him and trade old MMORPG stories".
