Epic Games loves to surprise Fortnite players with new content they never announced. That maneuver was made most famous when they recently shut down the game after an in-universe black hole swallowed the original map and spit the Fortnite crew back out in a new world with a totally remade map for what the developers called Chapter 2. Today, they've done that again, though on a less bombastic scale. A new harpoon gun, which was found by dataminers last week, is now available in Fortnite.
The harpoon gun acts as you may expect; firing it at an enemy pulls them toward you rapidly and brings them in for a close-quarters kill. It deals 75 damage to anyone it ensnares, with a magazine size of 10, and it takes 1.4 seconds to reload. It's just the latest of many new gadgets that have come to the immensely popular game since its launch two years ago.
Curiously, the new gun comes without any patch notes, as Epic sometimes likes players to happen upon new content on their own accord. This seems to be their intention for Chapter 2 specifically, as they've been very quiet since the game came back online in early October. It remains to be seen what other free content, if any, may be new to the game today.
Also new to Fortnite today is the Darkfire cosmetic bundle. It contains three outfits, three wraps, three backpacks, three pickaxes, and the "Unification" emote. The 13-item pack is the biggest ever sold in Fortnite and will retail for $29.99. Bought separately, the pack would cost $80, according to Epic Games. The cultish cosmetics come to all platforms today.
Fortnite Battle Royale released in 2017 to mighty reviews here on OpenCritic, with an 84 average from nine reviewers. It's still officially in beta, though that hasn't stopped it from growing to become the number one game by most metrics since it launched.
