Historically, The Game Awards has been used as much for future game promotion as it has been used for past game celebration. That looks to continue this year, with the first of what should be several reveals being teased today. Former Arkane Studios team members, responsible for series such as Dishonored and Prey, have revealed the formation of Wolf Eye Studios, an indie development house intent on crafting new experiences.
The studio is lead by Arkane Studios’ former President and Creative Director Raphael Colantonio, as well as Executive Producer Julien Roby. Colantonio will assume the same title in Wolf Eye as he did at Arkane and spoke on why the change was needed.
"After taking some time off, and consulting for a variety of video games companies, I’m ready for a new adventure," said the Creative Director, adding that Wolf Eye's intent is to create games in which players "live their own adventures in rich simulated worlds." He also spoke of the AAA space's aversion to risk and how setting up an indie studio will allow him the best space to innovate and "try new ideas and approaches."
Dishonored debuted in 2012 and won several Game of the Year awards in its own right. The sequel, Dishonored 2, was a critical hit garnering a Strong 86 score here on OpenCritic. Arkane's most recent effort, Prey, undersold publisher expectations but critics enjoyed it all the same, leading to its OpenCritic average of 81.
Details on Wolf Eye's debut game have not yet been revealed, but we do know when those details will arrive. Wolf Eye has teased a world premiere at this year's The Game Awards, sometimes affectionately referred to as "The Keighleys," on December 12.
It's safe to assume this won't be the sole reveal coming at the show, as it's maintained the reputation of being a hype generator given how much stage time is saved for new reveals each year alongside the actual awards. Expect more reveals in the coming days leading up to the show.
