I like Ever Oasis a lot, and while it doesn't reach the level of "future classic" like Persona 4 or Okami, it fits the bill perfectly as a closer for the Nintendo 3DS and its impressive run. If Nintendo drops a few more hits like this in our laps over the next year, I'll be happy to keep my 3DS in rotation.
Splatoon 2 is fun. You'll love it in spite of the minor blemishes.
Fire Emblem Echoes feels like it was rushed out of the gate as an afterthought for the final days of the Nintendo 3DS.
Cosmic Star Heroine is a winner, even if you're too young to have experienced the games it references. Check it out.
Prey is one of my favorite games of 2017 so far.
The art, in itself, makes Little Nightmares worth checking out. The story, the gameplay, and the length that come with it make it a bit harder to justify the price. As polished as the art and animation are, the other parts of the game feel like unfinished ideas. Little Nightmares deserves a look, but waiting for a sale might make more sense for many gamers.
Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is a really solid retro release, and if you are new to the series, it could provide a decent starting point for your new retro adventures. If you're more into the HD graphics, it's a solid platformer that gets by on teasing your intuition and challenging players to find the best path forward.
Frustration aside, GEM is a solid arcade shooter with a brilliant art design, decent tunes and a nice rhythm to its gameplay.
Nobody expected NieR: Automata to be this good, but by sheer force of will through all parties involved, it could very well wind up being the best game of 2017. It's a game that improves on the tired genres that it borrows from, and more importantly, it takes everyone's game to the next level.
More like 1-2-Snore
As far as I'm concerned, the two best original games for the Nintendo Switch are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Snipperclips. The latter isn't as spectacular as the former, but it's still a great game.
If you've built up Planescape: Torment to legendary status in your mind, or if you're looking for detailed mechanical systems, you may find Torment: Tides of Numenera a bit lacking. It's strengths are in the writing, art, and atmosphere. It's also a bit expensive right now.
Here we are with work from Creative Assembly that's actually fun. I won't suggest that it revolutionizes the RTs genre the way that the original Halo Wars did. That game managed to make RTS titles fun on console, something that I didn't even think I wanted until I actually had it in my hands. Creative Assembly further innovates on that already revolutionary formula.
The thrill of overcoming challenges provided in a game like Nioh simply isn't worth the frustration to me anymore, and I have Team Ninja to thank for finally helping me admit this. It's the ebb and flow of one's life and one's interests, and while I think Nioh is a really solid game that everyone should at least try, it's not the kind of game I want to be playing these days.
One of the longest running manga has its own Dynasty Warriors-style game, and hey - it actually works pretty well.
If you're looking for a challenging Nintendo platformer or you got your fill from the Wii U version, you're better off looking elsewhere. This is a solid game that runs well on the 3DS, but its extras don't really warrant a double dip or a purchase from a player looking for difficulty.
Not too much more frustrating than a puzzle game that has you spam clicking and interacting with every single object in a given space in order to solve its
Horizon Zero Dawn is, at times, the best game on the PlayStation 4.
It's only January, but Yakuza 0 has been marked as a contender for one of my favorites for the year.
If only the combat were better, more dynamic and more precise, I would have loved this game instead of simply liked it.
