It’s not the 3D Sonic game we wanted but it’s the one we’ve got. Sonic Forces gives us glimpses of what a good Sonic 3D game could look like but it does so much wrong that it’s not worth your time or money unless you’re a truly die-hard Sonic fan.
At a basic level, Unbox does have its moments, but unfortunately, it has too many shortcomings for it to overcome the many issues it has, in particular with the controls and the camera which can’t be ignored.
Coming with five short and largely forgettable experiences, it would’ve been the perfect free pack-in with the headset, but as a costly product, it’s hard to reccommend when other VR games have already vastly surpassed its offerings.
Overall, Mutants in Manhattan just feels a little lazy, one of the very last levels recycles all the previous bosses you have fought and you have to beat each one again before moving on. They are exactly the same, but much easier now that you have upgraded. Whilst the combat is fun at first it quickly grows old, there are a lot of small missed opportunities which could have made this game really fun. Sadly what we are left with is the bare bones of a hack and slash game with the Turtles branding.
Unfortunatly, Punch Club just does not live up to its promise or its looks. The time management aspect takes over in a frustrating manner, which combined with hands-off fights creates a mundane game.
Kirby will not be one of the most challenging games that you will play this year. However, it is fun and definitely can pass the time with a friend or two. If you’re a fan of Kirby, this game will give you more of the same Kirby that we know and love, don’t expect it to hold your attention for long though.
This chapter brought us some new types of gameplay. However, the story just didn’t bring the punch that we were hoping for and that had been built up throughout the other two episodes.
Episode 2 really aims to build on the story set out in the first episode. There’s not as much gameplay as in previous episodes, this does bring you back to the reality that this is, in essence, a visual novel but also allows the story to be developed in a fitting manner.
Pokken Tournament DX feels nice in everything it does. Which, for more casual fighting game fans who also love Pokemon is ideal. For those looking for a different fighting game, it’s best to look elsewhere, but, if you want an action-packed and easy to pick up and play fighter with a bit of colour, Pokken Tournament DX might be what you’re after.
While it may lack modes to keep your attention for long at launch, Arms’ base gameplay is solid and, more importantly, fun. If Nintendo can support Arms like it previously supported Splatoon, then this could be the next big franchise for Nintendo.
It’s worth playing if you’re a fan of the series or of Warhammer 40,000 in general but if you’re just looking for a new RTS you should definitely consider looking elsewhere.
Chapter One of Loading Human is an interesting start for the series. While the writing and character development won’t win any awards, most of the basic mechanics are solid after adjusting to the way you navigate. It might be worth waiting to see how Chapter Two and Three plan out before dipping in, but Loading Human is one to keep your eye on.
Despite the issues, Tumble is a lot of fun. There’s lots to do, whether you are looking for a bit of strategic fun or you just want to blow towers up and at a budget price, this game will make a great addition to any VR collection
Despite its drawbacks and lack of game modes, there’s something to Kick Off Revival that makes me smile and wince at the same time. With friends, its fast paced gameplay and chaotic nature can be a blast in small bursts, but for some, the intricate controls with just one button may prove to be an issue. Kick Off Revival fills a void that football fans that are bored of FIFA and Pro Evo need, but right now it feels unfinished, and will need a few more updates and tweaks to satisfy players for longer than just a few hours. There’s potential in a different type of football game, but we’re not quite there yet.
There are gameplay concerns but the setting helps to make up for it as Watch Dogs 2’s version of San Francisco is faithful, colourful and a joy to explore. It’s not in the top calibre of games this year, but it has interesting characters, unique elements, and more than enough missions to keep you busy for a while.
With a few friends in close proximity, you can still have fun with FIFA and its nice presentation. But for a real football fan who wants to recreate the moves of Barcelona and Dortmund, this isn't the football game you're looking for.
Hello Games can certainly fix a lot of No Man’s Sky’s faults over time and I believe they will. It has plenty of potential and already offers players an addictive and sometimes mesmerising experience. It’s just a shame that right now, it’s a skeleton of the game it could become.
The way Firewatch presents two people who barely know each other, is an intriguing way of exploring relationships between characters. Henry and Delilah's tale was the sole reason I wanted to continue playing. But it's the performance issues that may leave the long lasting impression here, as the PS4 version of the game was released in an unacceptable state.
Overall I found this to be a fun game to dip in and out of, but because of how challenging it quickly became, I found it wasn't a game that I could sit and play continuously for hours on end. A quicker pace may have helped Unravel to appeal more but potentially at the risk of losing its unique charm and character. Despite this, Unravel is a good game that with a few tweaks could see a much improved sequel come to fruition.
Despite the frustrating controls and minimal gameplay, Abzu remains a gorgeous and sometimes wondrous swimming simulator. The story may never emotionally resonate in the way it intends, but the world feels so alive that you will look forward to exploring it regardless. It may not be for everyone, but just let its beautiful music and striking visuals sweep over you. If you do, you'll find a game that is willing to experiment and take risks in order to achieve moments of wonder that few games ever achieve.
