I have a certain reverence for the Zero Escape series and hold it is certainly one of my favorite franchises. The narrative weaves a tale of corruption and deception, creating a deadly thriller where you want to find out the outcome. The Escape Rooms are great, especially VLR’s excellent rooms. This is a must play whether you do that on Vita or PS4. Once you have played both of these don’t forget it’s Zero Time Dilemma which I absolutely adored, giving it a perfect score. I’m not sure what’s next for Zero Escape, but I hope they continue with the series!
The game only has 19 trophies but it does include a Platinum trophy for your trouble, and it's not at all hard to obtain especially with the ability to rewind time. The game, story and gameplay mechanics are absolutely brilliant. The game gets full marks for uniqueness, and its graphics are great – very polished and stylish. The game has no voice acting, but that is not a deal-breaker. While The Sexy Brutale might be a short experience, it is highly recommended, addictive and well worth its asking price.
If you're looking for a solid chess game on PlayStation 4, then Chess Ultra is the way to go. It's a gorgeous release with chess pieces and environments that are hyper-realistic – especially when playing in 4k.
Subsurface Circulas is a great adventure release that shines on the Nintendo Switch. The HD rumble ads to the overall feel of the game, and the music greatly complements the overall experience to give us a short but great indie release that is one of the best game's on the Nintendo Switch. The game looks great on TV and on the Switch's screen, with a solid art style that shines on Nintendo's hybrid console.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is a massive game for PlayStation 4 and Vita with so much to do. It's a very fun and gorgeous game with a solid story, making this a game that you have to play on PlayStation 4 today. It's definitely now in the running for Game of the Year (at least in my book), and hopefully you will feel the same once you get started with your adventure!
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is a must-have game on PlayStation 4. The end of Kazuma Kiryu's run as the main protagonist of a series that start way back on the PlayStation 2 goes out with a bang, giving us the best Yakuza game ever. It will be very interesting to see where the team takes the franchise after this one, but after seeing what the Dragon Engine can do, I'm sure it will be a gorgeous entry that will keep the drama and the action going strong.
SteamWorld Heist is a must-have game on the Nintendo Switch, and since it's available as SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition, you get the main game and all DLC in a single download for a very affordable price. If you're a fan of SteamWorld Dig, or of its sequel (the aptly named SteamWorld Dig 2), and want to dive into an adventure that is different but just as fun, and set in the same SteamWorld universe, then you should download this game today. I highly recommend it since you'll be spending dozens of hours completing the whole game and its DLC missions. And once you've finished the game, you can dive right back in thanks to its New Game+…
I LOVED playing through Detroit: Become Human, and I highly recommend you to purchase it since it's one of the best games you can get on PS4!
Quarantine Circular's sneak release was a pleasant surprise since, after playing the previous Bithell Short, I was more than up for playing a new entry in this sub-series. The characters you'll meet feel like real human (and non-human) beings, with realistic interactions and reactions that will keep you going until the end. You're looking at a couple of hours or so to finish the game, and once you're done, you can do it all over again after activating the developer commentary track to learn more about the game and its development. I had a great time playing this one, and I look forward to the next Bithell Short!
Five year was a long time for this sequel, but Drinkbox Studios have totally delivered with this one. Guacamelee! 2 takes everything that was great in the first game, adds more on top of it and presents you this title that is without a doubt a must-play. Hands down the best metroidvania I've played since… Guacamelee!
Disgaea 1 Complete is an excellent remake of an excellent strategy RPG game, and it fits perfectly in the Nintendo Switch's library. We already got to enjoy Disgaea 5 Complete last year on Nintendo's hybrid console, and getting a chance to play the first one with a whole new look is definitely appreciated. There is a ton to do in this one, and that's without even going into Etna Mode which features an alternate scenario in which Etna ends up killing Laharl, so she becomes the main character of the story!
An outstanding mystery adventure that is a must-play on Nintendo Switch
Earthlock is by far a much better game now that it has been upgraded and revamped, giving us an excellent homage to the classic JRPG of the previous century we can play at home or on the go with ease. [OpenCritic note: Tracey separately reviewed the PS4 (9.5) and Switch (9) versions. Their scores have been averaged.]
Teslagrad was a very fun game back when I played it on the Nintendo Wii U, and this Nintendo Switch version is just as fun, with the bonus of being able to play it both at home or on the go as you please. The game runs great on both portable and docked mode, and I didn't notice any bugs during my time with the game – probably thanks to all the work done by Rain Games to improve on previous versions of the game which in turn benefited this new port. If you're looking for a 2D puzzle/platformer on Nintendo Switch, I highly recommend that you get this one today!
SteamWorld Dig is a game I have greatly enjoyed playing before in other consoles, and I was glad to get the chance to do it all over again on Nintendo Switch. If you've played the game before on other consoles then this is exactly the same game and it is just as addictive, but being able to play at home on the TV and take the adventure on the go in handheld and table top mode makes this the best version of the game.
It was great to play Lifeless Planet: Premier Edition on PlayStation 4. The graphic upgrades for this version and optimization here and there make it the definitive version, and who doesn't like an indie release with a full trophy count? I definitely had fun writing this Lifeless Planet: Premier Edition review, and I hope you try out this game soon!
The Journey Down: Episode 2 does a great job of setting up the final episode of the trilogy while taking us to a new location with a new set of characters to meet and puzzles to solve. It's a better episode when compared to the first chapter of the series, and I definitely recommend you check it out. I'm currently playing the third and final episode of the series, so I'll soon let you know what I think of the ending act for Bwanao, Kito and Lina's story!
As you can tell from our review, we're both big fans of platforming games like the beloved Rayman series, so playing Runbow for our review was a blast! The single and multiplayer experiences are quite fun and lengthy, so even if you're a fan of only one or the other, you'll find more than enough in this game to have fun. And if you happen to like playing solo and multiplayer, you've hit the jackpot with this game since its only $15!
If you're looking for a 21st century take on the beat 'em up genre then look no further – Mother Russia Bleeds is exactly the game you need! Sure, the violence and gore might not be for everyone, but the gameplay is fun and entertaining, and in the end, that's all you really want from a game. Be sure to give this one a go and let us know in the comments what you thought about your time with the game!
I had a lot of fun playing the game for my Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon review. The fun gameplay mechanics, gorgeous locations, and varied content grabbed my attention from start to finish. Kudos to the team for giving us a great PS4 game. I look forward to seeing what they're working on for their next project!
