If you own a Nintendo Switch and you’re a fan of Turn-based JRPGs, Fire Emblem: Three Houses should be on your “Must buy” list right now. It comes highly recommended and will keep you busy for hours and hours on end.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a great coop experience that manages to retain several elements of the prior Wolfenstein games – the gunplay, the characters, the excellent writing, and presentation – but changes up the mission-flow, enemy encounters, and the levelling mechanics to better facilitate a faster-paced game.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order doubles down on the formula that made the franchise so successful in the first place. It doesn’t try to win you over with a crazy story, nor does it reinvent the wheel, but it gives you a healthy serving of the Marvel roster and leaves the rest up to you.
Blazing Chrome is a must-buy for retro fans. It looks and plays great - albeit with a few frustrating aspects inherent to the genre - and is even more fun, and chaotic, in coop.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 is everything one could hope for in a sequel. Bigger environments, better gameplay mechanics, and a bunch of quality improvements. This makes for a better, more refined experience.
I certainly enjoyed my time with Sea of Solitude. Kay’s journey through the abandoned city had the right tone, and the amazing visuals of the world changing around you seamlessly as her and the other denizens’ emotions fluctuate throughout, was always something to behold.
They Are Billions on console is still a great survival RTS, but is let down by poor controls and variable performance. Despite those issues, I’d recommend it to RTS fans craving new content (it's not as though we get many RTS games on console), but take note it still requires some work.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is one of those masterpieces in gaming that only comes once every generation. With responsive controls, great combat and a massive list of weapons and items, it will keep you coming back for more.
Like the previously released Resident Evil 2 Remake, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is another shining example of how to do a remake of a beloved game. Adding a new coat of paint and some quality of life changes is all an old, and already great, game needs.
In the end what will make or break Super Mario Maker 2 is the online community and the quality of content it provides. Super Mario Maker 2 is both a homage to the games from the past that we know and love and a creative addition to the franchise.
Samurai Shodown feels like it was pulled from a forgotten era and given new life in 2019. SNK has more than proven they have what it takes to make a comeback with their latest title. With amazing style, gameplay that invokes a passion for fighting games of old, and charm coming from every crack, Samurai Shodown breathes new life into the series.
The Sinking City took a while to get its hooks into me and, once I got past some of it’s issues, especially the combat, I found myself thoroughly enthralled by its compelling narrative, exploration and puzzle solving gameplay.
F1 2019 does an amazing job, once again, at making you feel like an actual Formula 1 driver, and the attention to detail is what has always set this franchise apart. The inclusion of F2 into the F1 campaign is fantastic, but it would be great to see it extended.
Draugen is a stunning, emotionally resonant experience, and one of the best games I've played in 2019. For those unfamiliar with titles like Gone Home and Dear Esther (with a hint of BioShock), from which the game heavily lifts its inspirations, this might not be your cup of tea.
Conan Unconquered is a welcome addition to the RTS genre as it looks to change things up with a more defensive focus. The flaws in the game are not enough of a problem to stop me from recommending it to fans and newcomers to the genre. In fact, I would heartily agree to any invites for a co-op multiplayer session if you've picked it up.
Void Bastards is great fun in short bursts but is, unfortunately, let down by the limited scope of its environments, with no unique ships or even distinct "boss" encounters.
Warhammer: Chaosbane is a solid ARPG, of that there is little doubt. The combat, character classes, variety of enemies, and fun boss battles makes for an enjoyable experience. There are some issues with the game - bad voice acting, movement hinderances, and some graphical hiccups.
Hue is a wonderfully crafted puzzle platformer with an innovative take on how to make the puzzles of the games it is inspired by more interesting.
MotoGP 19 expands on its offering as the greatest motorcycle racing experience out there - short of actually getting on a bike - and the improvements to the physics engines, the addition of the historical riders, the helmet customisation, and potential great online modes, makes MotoGP 19 another smash hit for Milestone.
Team Sonic Racing is a decent mascot racer, that chose to focus too much on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The game sorely lacks in variety and can lose its charm once you try to dig more than skin deep. Sonic fans are sure to get a kick out of SEGA’s latest racer, but may feel there is a lot to be desired.
