5 / 10.0 - Sunset
Jul 12, 2015

It's held down by lacklustre writing, terribly boring gameplay, and even a pretty shoddy technical performance. Maybe there's a reason Sunset has shut the blinds for Tale of Tales.

MXGP has a solid, interesting control scheme that is rewarding when you figure out its quirks. The lack of meaningful content, however, in addition to its graphical presentation, severely limits any impetus to continue playing it.

Admittedly, a port of a fantastic and iconic game. Get it if you want, don't get it if you have any sense. Just be sure to have some cash left over for Street Fighter V next year, and all the other versions that Capcom are going to try to sell you in the years to come.

The platforming feels off, the puzzle solving is either too easy or too restrictive, and the humour regularly falls flat. There aren't really any collectables or hidden bonuses to flesh out the experience, and the checkpoints are too few and far between. I actually like the artstyle and puzzle ideas, but it's disappointing that the rest of the game really rubs me the wrong way.

Atelier Sophie isn’t at its best when doing particularly anything. It may only appeal to an alcove of anime fans, being so jovial you can practically hear it wishing you a merry Christmas. The broad stroke of the content can be experienced with any other JRPG, and better so. But if the home-bound, alchemic twist appeals, you may have a game worth persisting for.

An alright platformer with charming looks and characters, but nothing revolutionary.

An interesting premise squandered on poor storytelling and unremarkable play.

5.5 / 10.0 - Shadow Puppeteer
Sep 29, 2014

I can only hope that Sarepta continues to work on Shadow Puppeteer post-launch. It's a tough sell right now, but given the time and resources it deserves, this could be a great game.

5.5 / 10.0 - Crimson Dragon

Given how poorly designed some parts of the game are, its hard to recommend it to anyone. And yet, like I said, I had some good fun with it, despite everything else. As long as you go in not expecting a life changing experience, there's an afternoon or two of enjoyment to be had here.

Now with that out of the way, it's time to go see what all this fuss is about these "Wills" and "Kate" characters, whoever they might be.

5.5 / 10.0 - NHL 15
Oct 2, 2014

I have always enjoyed EA's NHL games, and what there is of NHL '15 works. But, it's not what's there that's the issue, it's what's missing. And, for what's missing EA Sports needs to spend a lot of time in the penalty box.

5.5 / 10.0 - Lords of the Fallen

With the groundwork for such an interesting world, it's a real shame that so many pieces fell short of expectations.

It's not just Jason that haunts this game. Bugs, lag, and lack of servers are the main horrors here.

5.7 / 10.0 - Screencheat

Interesting concept, and fun with friends, but a lack of online competition makes it rather dull.

Valkyria Revolution is a lifeless spinoff that lacks the spirit of its cult classic predecessor.

Unfortunately, this episode's strengths are all in superficial places. Nobody comes to a Telltale game looking for technical prowess, and plot is only a tiny part of what makes a good story. I hate to say it, but Above the Law falls flat in the places that matter most: the characters and depth that underpin everything else. Without that, the episode is particularly forgettable, which doesn't bode well for an episodic series that's already struggling with its release schedule.
