Horizon Forbidden West is a phenomenal game. It does everything it aims to do to a very high standard. However, it does very little to expand upon Zero Dawn outside of refining the formula.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands delivers a worthy Borderlands experience. Its action is as fun as ever, and its setting provides the series with fresh direction.
Ghostwire: Tokyo‘s biggest flaw is its one-dimensional gameplay. I cannot stress enough how simplistic and repetitive it is. And that diminishes any replay-ability once the main story is over. Unfortunately, this makes Ghostwire: Tokyo a largely forgettable experience and one I’m in no hurry to revisit. This is a game best left until it receives a substantial discount.
Unfortunately, unless you’re a hardcore looter-shooter fan looking for something free, this sci-fi take on Escape from Tarkov simply doesn’t cut the mustard. Bountiful glitches, a tedious gameplay loop, and an uninspiring and empty world make The Cycle: Frontier a truly mediocre experience.
Best of all though is the experience of playing as our cat hero. In that regard, Stray really is a game like no other. And the team at BlueTwelve Studio have done a tremendous job at realising the feline fantasy. Even though it’s disappointingly short, Stray is a must-play game this summer.
Saints Row is one of those hilariously bad games you have to experience for yourself. But it’s not ‘awful’ – just excruciatingly generic and downright dull.
Due to its launch proximity to Elden Ring and the sheer quality of AAA Soulslikes, I suspect Asterigos may be unfairly overlooked. Nonetheless, it is a resoundingly enjoyable experience that I would recommend to any Soulslike fan.
If it’s a blazing hot few hours of combat you’re after, you’ll find it in Modern Warfare 2. This is an enjoyable campaign buoyed by deep pockets and good looks. But it plays it too safe. Perhaps the inevitable third Modern Warfare 2 will bring change more akin to the first. Because the second missed its golden opportunity.
A Plague Tale: Requiem more than justifies its existence thanks to a brilliant continuation of the series’ story and general improvements all round.
Scarlet and Violet would probably go down as two of the best games in the series if not for these [performance] issues. Instead, all anyone will likely remember are the viral glitch montages that have swept across social media. And that’s regrettable because at their core is an imperfect yet charming and highly enjoyable adventure.
The Callisto Protocol is about as close to Dead Space as it could possibly be without bearing the same name. And for many players that will be more than enough to leave them satisfied... Nevertheless, the more you play of The Callisto Protocol the more its flaws stand out.
The end result is a God of War Ragnarök that stands among some of the best PlayStation games, but falls ever-so slightly short of the greatest. This is far from a disappointment. But it doesn’t quite reach the lofty heights of what came before.
I really wanted to like Forspoken. However, its obnoxious protagonist, generic story, visually unappealing and uninteresting world, and shallow gameplay make it nothing more than an average experience that I’m in no rush to revisit.
It says so much that Dead Space 2023 changes very little yet remains just as impressive as it was in 2008... It was a sheer pleasure to revisit one of my all-time favourites. Dead Space is a fitting tribute to a disrespected but ceaselessly beloved series.
Atomic Heart is worth checking out for its incredible setting alone – especially if you’re a Game Pass subscriber. But its disappointing gameplay lets down the exciting promise of its awe-inspiring world.
Hogwarts Legacy is a testament to the dedication of its creators and is worthy of its source material. But it could’ve been so much more. Instead, it settled for everything we expected and is destined to be remembered for the poisonous debate that preceded it.
After such a bumpy road, it’s wonderful that Dead Island 2 has arrived in such a commendable state. This is a game you can pick up and play and get exactly what you came for. Good ol’ fashioned zombie chaos with personality and an ambition to get it all right. And what more can you want after all these years?
Amnesia: The Bunker comes together as a thrilling race against the clock that should keep even the most steely-nerved players on their toes.
F1 23 is where the series finally achieves its current-gen potential, and we’re privileged to be here for it.
Layers of Fear is an acceptable package of horror stories, but that's about it. Its few scares do just about enough to earn a title that includes the word "fear", however it isn't in the same ballpark as other genre titans.
