Saints Row is a semi successful reboot providing fun gunplay and high customisation with some fun missions, but an empty world, monotonous mission design and high amount of bugs drag it down.
Saints Row is an open world action game that can be played either single player or in co-op. The gameplay is made up of story missions and side activities that usually involve shooting waves of enemies or driving from one place to another whilst transporting something. It can start to get a bit monotonous after a few hours, but the shooting tends to be fun and the driving has an arcadey feel which makes it easy to pick up and play.
The game does offer a high amount of customisation of characters, guns and cars which can make everything feel highly personal. The world provides a large map with many activities to do, however due to the lack of NPCs walking around and lack of interactivity it tends to feel lifeless. The world can look very good at times, but at others it looks outdated and the graphics can be ugly. The story and some of the missions involved are fun and provide great set pieces, but largely the story feels rushed and forgettable with character motivations that don’t always make sense. The characters are also at times unlikeable due to some poor writing decisions, with the dialogue and comedy not always hitting the way it was intended.
The game suffers from a large amount of bugs ranging across all platforms some ranging from minor visual bugs, to ones that would cause mission restart necessary.
