All things considered, Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is a repetitive and derivative game in which the few interesting plot and gameplay elements are borrowed from titles that handled them infinitely better. We can’t recommend this title to longtime fans of the series precisely because of the various narrative retcons, but we can suggest it to die-hard fans of platformers or the very first Castlevania games. We had high hopes for this return, and while Ascendance really isn’t what we expected, we still hope to revisit the gloomy realms of Nosgoth sooner or later.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is still one of the most compelling games to play, offering unique mechanics and a gripping story with perfect pacing. The additions this new edition brings to the table are enough to justify purchasing it even for those who have already gotten lost once in the streets of Minakami Village; however, the plethora of technical issues and some missteps in the implementation of the new mechanics prevent it from truly reaching greatness.

Romeo is a Dead Man is certainly a unique game; its style is hard to find in other titles of the genre, and the boldness with which it presents unconventional narrative choices and gameplay elements makes it truly one of a kind. However, certain flaws prevent it from becoming the standout title it could have been, and so even though it comes close to greatness—thanks to a nice variety in gameplay—it unfortunately fails to make the leap needed to be one of Suda51’s best games.

Syberia remains one of the most unique graphic adventures ever created. On the one hand, the original has aged surprisingly well; on the other, this remaster suffers from some technical issues that prevent it from being considered the definitive version of the world imagined by Sokal. Despite these limitations, it remains a worthwhile experience, especially for those who have never played Syberia before.

Legacy of Kain stands the test of time, with the Soul Reaver games still offering a remarkable experience. Aspyr’s new version enhances them like never before, making the journey through Nosgoth an unforgettable adventure despite a few dated mechanics.

Clock Tower undoubtedly deserves its place among the legends of video games, and we highly recommend that anyone even vaguely interested experience this old gem firsthand. While the port could have perhaps offered more after so many years since the initial release, when an artistic direction and gameplay concept are flawless, it's hard to improve without compromising the original. Rewind now provides the first official way to get lost in the corridors of the Barrows mansion.

Shadow of the Damned is a rough diamond, with its raw edges adding to its charm. While more could have been done to modernize the experience, this is still the best way to enjoy Garcia's wild adventure. Those who own the original have little reason to revisit this reissue, but for newcomers exploring these infernal streets, it's highly recommended.

7 / 10.0 - Selfloss
Sep 28, 2024

Selfloss is a hidden gem, with many of its flaws overlooked thanks to its unique personality and captivating setting. While it may not break new ground in gameplay—and certain stumbles are felt throughout—it remains a title worth exploring for those who want to immerse themselves in a thoughtfully crafted world.
