Overall, this Geppy-X release makes a once-rare PlayStation mecha game accessible to new players, especially with its all-new localization. The game is still fun to play, if a bit simple and easy for a shooter, but the sheer passion and super robot-infused nerdiness still make this worth getting.
All in all, 70s Style Robot Anime Geppy-X is a very cheesy game. However, it’s also fun as hell. Every time the vocals on a boss theme kick in, my heart starts thumping. If you’re a fan of mecha or shooters, definitely check it out.
For me, this is what game preservation is all about: exposing a new audience to a cult classic, lovingly repackaged with the care and attention it deserves.

Fans of '70s mech anime and Japanese entertainment in general will find plenty to adore, but those seeking 2D shooter combat may choose to change the channel.

As someone who grew up watching early days anime conversions to the West, there’s an absolute element of authenticity to the story and cutscenes, I just wish its gameplay held up better
In a world with games like Blippo+ and Squad 51 vs The Flying Saucers, it’s possible to imagine that Geppy-X could have succeeded in finding its niche, and maybe it still can. For its time, its focus on providing an experience rather than just a game makes it a rare thing. From an audio and visual standpoint it’s absorbing. Grand, over-the-top songs about Geppy fighting against evil are belted out behind an average shooter that takes a break to tell you not to pour salad dressing in your eyes. It feels appropriate that Geppy-X got a reverent remaster, because it absolutely deserves it.
