6.5 / 10.0 - PuzzMix
Apr 18, 2024

As a spin-off of GV, PuzzMix is one of the weakest and most uninspired, trying to be similar to the game on which it is based by bringing as few ideas as possible for whatever reason. Even Suika Game, a less ambitious experience, still took the opportunity to launch a paid expansion that brought multiplayer and other typical modes, such as Time Attack and Time Limit — something that could be in PuzzMix as a way of generating an advantage over its rival.

6.5 / 10.0 - Fruit Mountain
Jun 27, 2024

Fruit Mountain tries to subvert this “new” game genre through visual presentation, but that's it. The same experience you have with Suika Game or some other more contained derivative, you will have in this one too. Maybe I was expecting some “sub-elements”, but I promise that my expectations are perfectly aligned and that it is still a very competent game for what it proposes.

Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle Remastered and Soul Nomad & the World Eaters make for a great pair of classic games for the first volume of a collection. They are games that share the same gameplay style but bring their own particularities in terms of mechanics and narrative. Despite being titles that haven't aged very well, and that haven't even received a good re-release treatment, they are still great games that deserve to reach more players.

Prinny Presents NIS Classics Vol. 2 hits the nail on the head with NIS's choice of returning games, bringing improvements that, while basic, still add value to the Nintendo Switch library with titles that never before were considered to be on a Nintendo platform. However, I still feel that there would be room for more work on this package, common perks such as the soundtrack and artbook, are restricted to the physical version. In terms of features, the collection still leaves something to be desired in terms of resources that would be useful to compensate some game design choices that nowadays feel dated.

7 / 10.0 - Trinity Trigger
Apr 25, 2023

At the of the day, the simplicity of its controls and systems, in addition to a cooperative proposal, make this an enjoyable experience. It's a bit disappointing that such important names in the industry couldn't extract their full potential. Maybe the barrier was the low budget? Who knows... All in all, it's a title that's not to be thrown away, nor is it a mediocre experience, but given what it could deliver, the conclusion is that it's just another experience that's fun, but won't be that memorable.

Monster Menu: The Scavenger’s Cookbook offers a creative set of approaches that bring out what I love most about Nippon Ichi Software’s games: originality. However, like a lot of their projects, the execution is not the best for a number of reasons.

Debut Project: Cooking Café is ultimately an honest and enjoyable game, doing what is necessary to be successful for its target audience. Although some game design issues may make you question its overall quality, it is not offensive. So even with my criticisms, it's still a pretty solid game.

7.5 / 10.0 - Rune Factory 5
Mar 22, 2022

It's been 10 years of waiting for a new entry in this franchise since the release of Rune Factory 4 for the Nintendo 3DS, and even if the final result falls short of what fans deserve, Rune Factory 5 is still a genuinely enjoyable experience. I guarantee that the events of interaction will provide unique moments of relaxation and good laughs, and the simple but engaging plot is the least you'd expect from a game in the series.

All in all, Prinny Presents NIS Classics Vol. 3 is still a package that falls short of what it could have offered, just like the other two. There are several other similar treatments on the Nintendo Switch that do better than this. However, in terms of the games, I think they were the right choices. Although there are reservations, for an avid fan of Nippon Ichi Software's works, this is certainly a great package in the end.

Deckbuilders roguelite are a typical genre in the indie scene, and Yohane the Parhelion – NUMAZU in the MIRAGE – seems to fit in well. Therefore, it is an easy recommendation for enthusiasts of the genre — I say this because I really enjoy games with this theme, although I admit that it is not something I play as often as I do with JRPGs.

7.5 / 10.0 - Fashion Dreamer
Nov 17, 2023

Fashion Dream is a difficulty recommendation for those who have no experience with the genre, but for those who like to spend hours putting together looks and would love a new Style Savvy or similar, it is perfectly recommended, but with reservations.

Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk is a solid and engaging experience. It offers distinct mechanics and a nice level of difficulty, making it a surefire recommendation for fans of the series. It takes advantage of several features already featured in NIS's Tactical RPG games, but adapts them to the format of a DRPG, while still introducing its own unique features.

Ultimately, Atelier Totori is a captivating adventure full of characters with pure charisma. It may not be perfect as a JRPG, but it's far from a subpar experience. I guarantee that if you liked Atelier Rorona, it will be very difficult to hate this. Furthermore, for what it sets out to be, it still fulfills its role of being a game designed to be a relaxed experience that keeps the Atelier formula intact so that it can continue to improve itselft further.

Yohane the Parhelion -BLAZE in the DEEPBLUE- is much more than a cheap anime-to-videogame conversion. Inti Creates' pedigree has helped make it a premium metroidvania experience and a solid recommendation for hardcore fans.

Bravely Default II plays it safe but satisfactorily delivers everything that was presented in the previous games in an improved way and with additions that, although welcome, are nothing like we've seen in other JRPG titles. The graphics are striking due to the quality of the textures, but what really stands out are the mechanics already established in the series and the return of composer Revo for the game's music, which in turn generate memorable moments in the game in addition to exciting battles against the Asterisk holders.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is an epic adventure about determination and resilience, with all the silly and questionable humor that only Disgaea has to offer. It masterfully captures the essence of the series, while also trying to innovate within the franchise itself. The mechanics of Super Reincarnation may not reinvent the wheel, but they are very well executed within the narrative context and gameplay. It was fun to follow Zed and the charismatic cast of characters around him, all memorable and unique.

Understanding its limitations and the path this remake wanted to follow, Atelier Marie is an easy recommendation for old-school audiences, being a historical reparation in which players on this side of the globe will finally get their hands on it after 25 years stuck in Japan. For beginners, starting with it may be a good option, but with reservations. Now, for those who have only played the Secret saga, it is a little difficult to recommend it, as its simplicity and the fact that it is more of a simulation than an RPG contrasts with Ryza's games, which may be weird to some players.

Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land invites us to explore an intriguing world with a dark tone and a denser narrative than any other Atelier has seen before. It is a very competent RPG when it comes to presenting gameplay mechanics that tend to attract a large audience. On the other hand, veterans may be disappointed to see that elements that give uniqueness to the series are neglected.

The Lost Hero is a honorable sequel that doesn't limit itself to the past and wants to offer to the player something refreshing while keeping it faithful to the original. It's a title that innovates in its systems and abuses them in the right way; it's especially challenging enough for SRPG fans, but also accessible in the same manner for those who aren't as keen in the genre. Its story is equally accessible, offering a simple narrative, but well structured and tight with a colorful and fun cast.

Despite initially seeming complex, Princess Maker 2 proves to be a masterpiece of social simulation games once you understand what needs to be done. I've never played anything like it before and there might not even be anything like Princess Maker on the market these days. As a newcomer, it was a fun experience overall, and the gameplay loop kept me hooked until I could watch my daughter get on with her life and bring tears of pride to my eyes. This remaster, however, despite being welcome to catch potential dads of the current generation, ends up being too basic, to say the least. It turns out that, for those who are veterans, shelling out money to replay this, it is perhaps only justified by the glimpse of Takami Aka's new arts, as I don't believe that the scope itself has expanded.
