If you appreciate games for what they are, fascinated by how they're made and all the craftsmanship that goes into every last detail, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not giving Arzette a chance! There's a good chance, in fact, that your eyes will be opened to see more of the small miracles that are games like Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon, even if they're not finished, given the circumstances, hardware, and time. And who knows, maybe at least one person will change their mind about simply making fun of games that, let's be honest, were never made to be intentionally bad.

There's no doubt that a lot of love went into the title, and that it was made more out of a passion for revisiting a classic formula than creating a new, groundbreaking brand. The production values are decently pleasing, with its more primitive elements referencing its arcade-style older brother (the same Space Harrier graphics are used in every enemy projectile). But for the average player looking to discover a new indie game to try on the eShop, this is where the hesitation lies. All in all, if you already know who Yu Suzuki is and his legacy, you can dive headfirst into the world of Air Twister and you won't regret yet another spiritual successor that fails to live up to expectations and carves out its own identity.

Although the challenges are amplified as you pass the stages, introducing new elements, including the aforementioned powers, making the experience in that particular stage unique among the others, the game does not provide much variety, and you will inevitably get tired of the structure very quickly. It's the old problem of seeing everything the game has to offer in the first few moments, and in Gwen's case, it could be in the first 10 or 15 minutes (that is, if you don't die repeatedly in the first level during that period). The ability to purchase CheckPoints is eventually unlocked in the HUB to speed up your process with these levels, but the amount of collectibles needed is too large to even bother purchasing.

If Sonic Frontiers was an experiment to create a new foundation for the franchise, as the Boost formula was for the last 14 years, there is a lot to polish, to study similar games in the genre, and the message of “bigger is not always better” is the one that remains. While several conventions of the last games were discarded in favor of a new experience, there are not enough changes to provide something completely new either, and this baggage is one of the most notable problems. The lack of polish throughout doesn't help either. However, it is refreshing to see the franchise take a new direction, even without complete commitment, and who knows, maybe between two or more attempts along these lines, we won't have to be so methodical when recommending a 3D game of the blue hedgehog.

With so many control, training and customization options, it's an almost perfect package, with the only shortcomings being the distribution of music genres and the decision to not include at least the tracks already present in the previous game on the Nintendo Switch. But if we could recommend just one game in the series for the console, this is a good place to start!
