In a game industry where everything is changing one way or another and undergoing a fundamental paradigm shift, Beethoven & Dinosaur deserves praise for taking an active role in this transformation instead of taking refuge in the comfort of uniformity. Mixtape stands as an important example of how independent game development, with the right project management, can achieve both cinematic creativity and a modest, heartfelt style of storytelling at the same time.

While Saros tries to offer its protagonist, who seeks to rewrite the past, “a new tomorrow,” it unfortunately traps the player in the same cycle. Although the player-friendly features added following feedback from Returnal create a much smoother experience, the balance of difficulty can occasionally spiral out of control. As a result, Saros ends up being a game that addresses the shortcomings of the genres Housemarque knows best, while also dulling some of the studio’s greatest strengths.

In an industry where everything feels increasingly homogenized and repetitive, Pragmata stands out as a breath of fresh air — a game that feels both familiar and entirely new at the same time. With its innovative gameplay, consistently engaging pacing, gameplay loop that constantly keeps the player on their toes, and lovable characters, it’s safe to say that Capcom has created a promising new franchise.

Despite everything, in today’s industry where the platformer genre is often treated as a blank slate to simply build upon, games like this still hold a valuable place thanks to their straightforward approach. However, the comfort that comes with being ‘old-school’ should not make studios forget that game design itself needs to evolve just as much as production values do. In this regard, Darwin’s Paradox! unfortunately fails to go beyond offering lazy nostalgia, wasting much of its high potential.

Resident Evil Requiem is an enjoyable sequel that successfully blends the different gameplay styles Capcom has developed over the years into a single cohesive experience. It is also likely the highest-production example of the survival horror genre to date. While its expensive development process clearly shows through strengths such as smooth optimization, innovative gameplay mechanics, and intricate level design, the game still carries some of the series’ familiar weaknesses, particularly in pacing and screenplay writing. Bringing together both old and new generations of players, Resident Evil Requiem feels like a celebration of everything the franchise has offered so far. Despite its flaws, it ultimately succeeds as an exciting experiment within today’s increasingly soulless gaming industry.

Keeper is a game that can make you feel tiny at times and enormous at others. Unlike today’s gaming trends, which constantly push players to become “the biggest force in the room,” its patient and deliberate progression feels far more rewarding in my opinion.

Available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, the game invites players into a carefully crafted cycle of tension and stress that constantly keeps them engaged. 11 bit studios manages to hook players effortlessly — whether they are fans of survival games or not — through its excellent UI design and deeply engaging management systems. More importantly, the narrative fully embraces its concept from beginning to end, giving every task and routine mechanic a strong sense of purpose and motivation.

DOOM: The Dark Ages continues to preserve the fast and aggressive gameplay style the series is known for, while drawing strength from several new mechanics and ideas. Even so, its attempts to simplify the core gameplay loop do not entirely succeed, and instead of feeling more streamlined, the experience occasionally comes across as more ordinary and less distinctive.

Split Fiction very clearly feels like a game that went through an exceptional testing and refinement process in every possible aspect. Considering the sheer amount of content it offers, it is genuinely difficult to understand how Hazelight Studios managed to step back from development and evaluate the experience so effectively from a player’s perspective. Josef Fares makes his player-friendly philosophy felt throughout every moment of Split Fiction — even in the way the game is marketed.
