Alex Hamilton's Reviews

After completing a master's degree in ancient history Alex realised he'd actually prefer to write stuff on the internet, and has left a trail of more than 1,000 articles in his wake. A financial reporter by day and PC gaming elitist by night, he loves all things Overwatch and Football Manager.

It would be slightly unfair to say that a lot of these changes feel like a user-made mod, but at a price point as high as this, I can’t in good conscience recommend it as a must-buy for players of the base game.

9.5 / 10.0 - Overwatch
Dec 6, 2016

Overwatch is a punch to the face for multiplayer shooters. It mingles quick-fix, objective-based gameplay with a deep tactical core and intelligent meta, forming a game that is simply perfect in short bites and thoroughly satisfying to play for hours on end.

Both campaigns add maybe eight to ten hours of extra gameplay onto Total War: Warhammer, and while solid, enjoyable experiences neither are anything to write home about. Despite this, fans of the two races will have lots to explore and enjoy.

4 / 10.0 - Eisenhorn: XENOS
Oct 29, 2016

Simple combat, poor mechanics, boring voice acting and some unpolished graphics mean that the fans of the book series might find themselves struggling to finish it. For those without an invested interest in the character or the story: this is one to avoid.

The Grim and the Grave is as worth it as you deem it. Completionists won't be disappointed by spending their cash but those who want to shy away from the price can rest assured knowing they're not missing out on essential game content.

Leviathans is a DLC pack that really adds some meat and bone to Stellaris. It attempts to add to the feeling of discovery the player gets when first reaching out for the stars by rewarding them with the dying remnants of old empires and the challenges of titantic other-wordly life.

9 / 10.0 - Battlefield 1
Oct 24, 2016

There’s very little to dislike about Battlefield 1. What the game is at its core is a beautiful-looking and exciting period shooter that will give fans of the series (and those that have been clamouring for a AAA historical FPS) hours of fun.

7 / 10.0 - BOID
Sep 13, 2016

BOID is a strategy game that is bare-bones in terms of content, but what it has is exceptionally well-polished.

This DLC will satisfy anyone hoping to add to their vanilla game experience, though some might want to wait until it goes on sale at a lower price point.

5 / 10.0 - Mighty No. 9

This game could have been so much more had it not been saddled with a weight of expectation as great as being a spiritual successor of the Mega Man series. It isn't bad, it's just painfully average. For all the clamour and claims that had been made about the title nothing in it actually lives up to the hype.

8 / 10.0 - Poly Bridge

Poly Bridge is a title that will thrill those who enjoy the genre - it has very few flaws and a lot of playability. Cute, creative and challenging, it's a thoroughly enjoyable title.

7 / 10.0 - Koihime Enbu
Jun 6, 2016

Koihime Enbu is a surprisingly well-designed fighter and, while it might not shake up the industry, has very little wrong with it and quite a lot going for it.

Sandbox possibilities and endless ‘what-if’ questions bump up what is already an impressive level of replayability. Paradox Interactive have created a game that strategy gamers and history buffs should get on their shelves as soon as possible.

Total War: Warhammer is a lovingly-crafted representation of the Warhammer world that is ripe for players to forge their stories in. It's a must-buy for every Warhammer fan and Total War aficionado and is potentially the best release from the studio since the original Rome: Total War.

8.5 / 10.0 - Stellaris
May 9, 2016

A blisteringly fun early game can be dampened somewhat by the bloated middle and late stages, but Stellaris is another example of Paradox Interactive showcasing that they are the kings of grand strategy, and is a game that every fan of the genre should have in their collection.

At once gorgeous, accessible, true to the lore and entirely engrossing, there hasn’t been as emphatic a tribute to the universe of Warhammer 40,000 since Dawn of War. Warhammer fans will love it and space RTS bods will enjoy its complexity and depth of tactics. Battlefleet Gothic is a game the God-Emperor Himself would be proud of.

For those with a passion for intensely difficult games We Are The Dwarves could perhaps be your greatest challenge yet. Frustrating it may be, yet Whale Rock Games have created a title with an admirable amount of effort put into creating a universe and lore that draws the player into its innermost secrets.

A lack of variety and a bit of polish on the mechanics leaves the game feeling less like a release and more like a well-made flash game you might find online. With a difficulty rating that shoots sky-high in relatively little time, this is a game that only the hardest of hardcore players will complete and enjoy to its full potential.

10 / 10.0 - XCOM 2
Feb 4, 2016

Despite being a fan of the XCOM series as a whole I never expected this new entry to be as polished, intricate, immersive, beautiful and exciting as it is. XCOM 2 is not only one of the greatest strategy games of all time, it's also one of the greatest videogames of all time.

Age of Charlemagne is a great way to improve on a Total War engine that sorely needed extra testing and bug-cleaning. Tight, attractive and challenging, it's the perfect way to prepare for the upcoming Total War: Warhammer but also a good DLC in its own right.
