In the end Maize turned out to be kind of a boring mess. I’m pretty sure there will be people out there that absolutely adore this game and it’s comedy and puzzle solving and all that but it just wasn’t for me. I do enjoy games of this genre but this just wasn’t a well executed game. To quote my friend who was playing this with me, “I would rather be doing SAT Math.”
White Day certainly has some things going for it, it has great atmosphere, the puzzles are all fun to do and the optional ghost scenes are all really interesting. But when it comes down to it there’s really nothing else going for it besides these things. The AI can be wonky at times and there will be some frustrating deaths. The story is kinda barebones but forgivable. I would suggest this game to someone who is a mega-fan of horror games, but not to someone who isn’t since there are WAY better games out there. All things considered, I think the game is just alright.
Yakuza Kiwami has been another great addition to a series with nothing but great games. While I would say that its high notes aren’t as good as Yakuza 0’s, this can be excused for the most part as it technically is the first game of the series. Either way this game will please fans new and old so don’t miss out on it!
Pyre completely blew my expectation out of the water as I was not prepared to be so emotionally invested in all of these characters and letting go was even harder. I don’t have any complaints for this game and I can’t wait to start a second playthrough. If you liked Bastion or Transistor then please do yourself a favor and check this one out. It is arguably the best one of those three.
Valkyrie Drive has seriously impressed me I don’t think I was expecting to like this game as much as I did. I seriously despise the fan service-ey type anime that’s always around and yet I liked this because of it’s almost self-aware, raunchy nature. If you want a dumb little action game and you have a lot of time to spend check this game out on either PSVita or PC
I was seriously expecting something that I could sink in maybe 6-7 hours into but this game has just so little to offer. The community made stuff is interesting but I don’t see it succeeding that much in that department. It can be fun with friends and since you can have so many people playing it could be a really fun party game. But at a base level the game fails to impress at almost everything. It’s like it’s almost there but just doesn’t quite have it yet. I feel like I’ve been way too harsh on this game. And that might be cause I’ve been spoiled by so many great top-down shooters that they just leave this in the dust. Either way this game doesn’t have huge faults but it just lacking everywhere.
Overall I think Tekken succeeds in living up to the legacy its established and for me personally I think this is the best Tekken game since 5. The weird way character endings are presented was really off putting, and the main story was short and not all that great. A larger main story as well as challenging the player to actually earn the character endings would’ve made it a whole lot better. But at its core it’s a damn fine fighting game and it’ll be keeping me invested for a long, long time.
In the end I can only say I had a boring time, that’s right, boring. The game by no means is bad. It can be quite good for some people but clearly I wasn’t impressed by it at all, everything from the gameplay to the art style just rubbed me the wrong way and just left me bored. If this game was for some mobile device or some kind of portable console I could maybe forgive a lot of the things. But as a game that’s on Steam where there is an absolutely countless amount of amazing games out I just can’t see this game working. And for the price of $8.99 you could buy something that has a lot more polish and care but into it. Monster Slayers for me at least is lifeless and dull with only a few redeeming qualities that I frankly, can’t even accept but I know other people could.
Dynasty Warriors is by no means a bad game, but it isn’t a game that is great either. It’s bland and boring with only a small amount of satisfaction to be had with the gameplay. If some more depth was added and more interesting mechanics, interesting enemies and even better attack animations I could see this game being a fun little experience. The historical figures and the time period it is set around is interesting but not interesting enough for me to power through how bored I was playing this game. It’s probably one of the least offensive games I’ve ever played. With a game that does nothing interesting in a market where so many interesting things are being done I don’t think this game has any right to be more than it is. In the end I can only say that it’s a game.
NieR Automata is a special game, a miracle even that a Yoko Taro game has amazing gameplay that compliments the story. An absolutely amazing story that I still think about after beating and a great amount of replay value. Even though it’s ideal that you do some homework before going into NieR Automata for the best possible experience story wise you can still play it and have a good time no problem. The success of this game could mean more Yoko Taro directed games and even more collaborations with Platinum. Here’s hoping for more in the future.
Nioh is another killer IP that solidifies itself as one of the best in the PS4’s line-up. Team Ninja has redeemed itself by making a game that is not only well thought-out and greatly designed, but also absolutely oozing with charm. I can’t wait to see what Team Ninja makes next after playing this treat of a game.
