Damien King's Reviews
Sudden Strike 4 is that grizzled veteran you sometimes see downtown — stubborn and tough to warm up to, but full of rich tales and a welcome new friend for those willing to put the work in. Perhaps a little too tough for casual RTS players, but WWII aficionados and hardcore RTSers will find plenty to love.
Brut@l helps fill the void of roguelikes available on the PlayStation 4, though the lack of persistent upgrades makes Brut@l more of a game meant to be played in short bursts rather than working on a long-term improvement and domination. The solid gameplay and easy learning curve make Brut@l a strong introduction to roguelikes, though experienced dungeoneers may find it too shallow.
For franchise fans, this is a no-brainer, capturing the feel of the AoT world and its messy, visceral combat. For everyone else, this is a maybe; combat is fluid and takedowns are satisfying, but gameplay can get monotonous. Try before you buy.
Aven Colony is a solid, enjoyable city builder with a number of interesting and difficult mechanics that will make or break the experience depending on whether you're looking for a peaceful builder (Sim City) or enjoy the occasional challenge (Banished).
For a longtime Worms player, Worms W.M.D. feels like finding and putting on your old favorite jeans — comfortable, familiar and feels like home. Worms W.M.D is best played with a bunch of friends, but the single-player content isn't too bad and will be a challenge to fully complete.
Despite the unusual fluctuations in difficulty, Song of the Deep is nonetheless a fun game that appeals to your sense of adventure. A wealth of interesting areas to explore will keep you glued to the game for hours.
Part tabletop adventure, part third-person combat, Hand of Fate 2 is an unusual amalgamation which successfully manages to let you tailor and experience a multitude of quests. Improving upon the original with more focused direction, customisation and improved combat flow, RPG and "choose your own adventure" fans should certainly take a look.
After pushing through the first two hours of few interesting upgrades or weapons, The Mummy Demastered becomes an above-average title that tickles the fancy of those missing classic Metroid gameplay. It's not perfect, but certainly enough to whet the appetite of metroidvania fans.
Master X Master is a fresh take on the stagnating MOBA genre, with character switching offering a fantastic level of depth to PVP and a decent chunk of available PVE instances to grind and loot. Definitely worth taking a look at.
Tyranny is an excellent first step into RPGs, with an enticing storyline that manages to continually surprise and excite. While hardcore RPG fans may dislike the simplified combat and shorter core game length, these factors help the storyline shine and keep it accessible for more people. Definitely worth a look, especially for Pillars of Eternity fans.
For those who enjoy light visual novels, KARAKARA is a great way to spend an evening, especially with its excellent voice acting.
A fun RTS that doesn't take itself too seriously. Punishing campaign difficulty and online multiplayer modes help build a long lifespan for our barbarian friends. While it won't replace your Starcraft or Total War, it'll complement them nicely when you want a more lighthearted change of pace.
With a large world full of humor and adventure to explore, Rainbow Skies improves upon its predecessor in every way, offering plenty to tactical RPG fans who like their quests a little quirky. A must-have for Disgaea fans.
Astoundingly charming, A Hat In Time manages to make almost every moment of gameplay a blast. Despite the occasional frustrating difficulty spike, the delightful whimsical personality of the game manages to win over even the most hardened of hearts. 3D platformer fans should definitely snap this one up.
Despite the occasional bug and some derpy AI here and there, Prison Architect is a solid title that hits all the right notes for simulation fans, taking an obscure concept and transforming it into a fun game that delivers hundreds of hours of playtime.
A fun, easy to learn puzzler that manages to captivate and entice you for "just one more level", Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle is an enjoyable experience for Slayaway Camp afficionados and newcomers alike, especially as a free to play title.
Once past the inital hurdle of learning the game and its myriad intricacies, The Escapists 2 offers a solid prison break vibe that lets you explore and try out multiple grand (or subtle!) escape plans in a solid variety of prisons. The addition of a fun multiplayer experience, much requested by fans of the original, is icing on the cake.
Fans of the franchise will love rediscovering Firetop Mountain in this adaptation, bringing the world to life in a gorgeous and interesting new way. Players unfamiliar with the gamebooks will still likely enjoy the game in its own right, though retracing steps and repetition can be a little problematic.
With a gorgeous look and some surprisingly taxing boss battles, Cuphead stylishly combines adorableness and adversity in equal measure, difficult enough to take multiple attempts while fun enough to warrant the repeated efforts. Take a look if you enjoy challenging and unusual titles.
Armello is an excellent staple of turn-based strategy games. With its charming aesthetic, many subtle nuances and ways to foil opponents, fans of the genre will appreciate the depth on offer here, though it may be a little too slow paced for gamers new to the genre.
