7 / 10.0 - Snooker 19
Apr 29, 2019

Even with a mainstream approach, reached through a huge roster and shiny scenarios, Snooker 19 is designed to really satisfy only a small niche of fans of the discipline.

Fanise's new game feels like an interesting way of remembering the Great War, but it does not take full advantage of the possibilities offered by the video game medium.

Super Soccer Blast: America vs Europe is a small, arcade soccer game that is super entertaining to play, at least for the first hours. As almost every other arcade sport game, when you learn to master all of its mechanics it gets a little less entertaining, but you can always use it as an old-style 1vs1 couch game with friends. Few rules, a fast pace and hilarious names are everything the Euro (or Copa America) summer needs.

7.2 / 10.0 - As Dusk Falls
Jul 18, 2022

As Dusk Falls is a mixed bag. The story, while certainly not out of this world, provides good characters and a fair amount of drama, but the peculiar art style doesn't always succeed in conveying the right emotion. The voice-over, and especially the Italian dubbing, also occasionally suffers from the same issue. The multiplayer mode does make the game more engaging, but it's still an experience with very little interaction. Enjoyment might vary wildly depending on your tastes.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl tries to be a challenger for Super Smash Bros. and aims for the weak spot of his opponent, showing off a stable and solid netcode. A good multiplayer and tight controls, though, are not enough to reach the stars. The roster is good and varied, but a little scarce right now (maybe DLCs will fill the gap) and characters lack characterization (no pun intended): a pity, because Nickelodeon's original voices and music would have added a lot of value to the game.

7.4 / 10.0 - The Gunk
Dec 23, 2021

The Gunk is game full of charm, thanks especially to its wonderful art direction and the colorful alien world it created. Unfortunately, despite its short duration The Gunk does not manage to carry this sense of wonder all the way to the end, due to repetitiveness of environments and a gameplay that ends up being far too simplistic. It's still a valid title, especially for younger players; it just needed a little more to truly shine.

7.4 / 10.0 - The Wild Eight
Feb 19, 2021

Surviving, nowadays, is hard. It's DAMN hard. So it's good to find a survival game like The Wild Eight that does not enjoy punishing the player without reason. I still don't know if this softer approach is an attempt to offset some design issues (like the combat, or the clunky inventory) or if it was meant to be like this since the beginning. Anyway, The Wild Wight feels like a survival game approachable even by players that usually don't like survival games so much, and at the end of the day this feels like good news.

7.5 / 10.0 - Gomorrah
Mar 7, 2023

34BigThings visual novel is a very interesting experiment, especially with that budget price and because of the excellent writing that succeeds in offering a more informed approach to the organized crime narrative. However the game struggles to convey the weight of choices and activity: this is a less influential element, but it risks depowering at least some of the impact of the narrative.

7.5 / 10.0 - The Last Cube
Mar 25, 2022

Even with all its limitations, The Last Cube strives to do one thing, simply one thing, and succeeds in its intent. It is a solid puzzle game that knows how to keep its idea interesting level after level, and when to stop. The challenge remains on a consistent level throughout the five worlds, and considering how small the team is, the slight technical missteps are forgivable. A good choice if you are into puzzle games.

7.5 / 10.0 - About An Elf
Mar 8, 2022

Artistic provocation that is more form than meaning or courageous exploration of the aesthetic limits of the video game? About an Elf is probably both, and that's why it's worth playing. Its five-hours mix of visual novel, RPG and point&click will be one of the surreal-est experiences you could have with a joypad in your hands.

7.5 / 10.0 - Chorus
Dec 3, 2021

There are not that many space combat games out there, so Chorus could be a good pick if you like an action packed and ready-to-go game that doesn't require you to study astrophysics like Elite o Star Citizen. The drawback is that, mechanics wise, Chorus is fairly repetitive, and not that mechanically deep. It could still be a good choice if you're aching to shoot space lasers, but in a couple of hours you might realize you're becoming more of a space tourist than an ace pilot.

7.5 / 10.0 - Oddworld: Soulstorm
Apr 12, 2021

Oddworld: Soulstorm is an imperfect game, like many other, but unlinke most of them it accepts the idea of taking risks to achieve something different. Unfortunately, it only sometimes happens, but it was worth trying. As Abe knows well, there's no way other than fighting (or jumping, or chanting…) to achieve what you want.

7.5 / 10.0 - Gods Will Fall
Jan 29, 2021

When a new idea arises in a genre where recycling is the new normal, it's always good news: and this is the case with Gods Will Fall, who reminds us that challenging the gods is quite the gamble. Unfortunately, even if the idea is clever enough to be appreciable even when it causes anger, it does not appear to be supported by an equally valid gameplay. The boss fights with the giant gods are quite entertaining to play, but the tons of repetitive battles against uninteresting enemies that you have to face to get there feel way less intriguing.

Ringfit Boxing 2 is a strange mix between WiiFt and Just Dance, but it works. Since you can't get out a lot nowadays, if you like training having a fitness app you can use and enjoy everywhere may be a good idea. Motion detection is quite accurate and the daily training program has a good variety of exercises. It won't last forever, but it should do its job until the lockdown ends.

7.5 / 10.0 - The Hand of Glory
Jun 15, 2020

The Hand of Glory overflows with ideas. Not all of them are spot on, but that's a risk you have to take when you want to do something that goes a little out of the classic schemes. The first impact is alienating because everything is not very homogeneous, from the graphics to the continuous change of register in the narration, but in the long run this strange alchemical formula works, thanks to a plot that turns towards decidedly unexpected territories and leaves the player with a giant cliffhanger, raising the hype for the second part of the game.

7.5 / 10.0 - Maneater
May 22, 2020

Maneater feels like a b-movie and it's not ashamed of it. The atmosphere is undoubtedly its best value and, if you wanna appreciate it, you must avoid looking too much at the details. The idea on which the game is based, after all, is that fish are smarter than humans, so Maneater rightly treat us accordingly.

7.5 / 10.0 - Unheard
Apr 30, 2019

Sometimes a single good idea is enough to think out of the box and make a simple, but intriguing game. Unheard proves that listening can be as engaging as watching, but it lacks any kind of reward, making patience more valuable than skills.

You can't think of combining the irreverent spirit of the Suicide Squad with a formula plastered around what are considered the most marketable fashions at the moment. The risk is twofold, that of creating a game that dresses badly around the protagonists, but also that of arriving out of time, to fashions that are now deflated. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League stumbles into both of these mistakes. Yet here and there flashes of funny situations emerge, the characters have charisma, the writing is good with excellent quality tips and Rocksteady know how to do their job technically. Let's hope the live service experiments with superhero groups are over here.

Cyanide & Happiness: Freakpocalypse is a game made for C&H's fans, rather than point&click lovers, and it's okay. The game's mechanics act as a stimulus, prompting the player to talk to all the characters and examine every single part of the setting, enjoying the surreal dialogues and absurd descriptions that dot the game. I don't know if everybody can appreciate it, but if you like dark humor and you're not afraid of BDSM teachers, bullies and delusional weirdos, this is a point&click adventure that may fit your lovely taste.

7.6 / 10.0 - Wavey The Rocket
May 7, 2020

My mind has not yet been able to fully grasp Wavey's wave movements, but the UpperRoom Games' title is undoubtedly an original and intelligent "platform" that brings to mind the glories of Sonic launched at crazy speed through his articulated and strange levels.
