Critic Reviews for Max Payne 3

Rockstar has impeccably reappropriated Max Payne. It's darker than ever, and while Max Payne is certainly moving in a new direction with this episode, he remains a deeply black, tortured character, who kills in slow motion to accelerate his depression. Hyper playable, beautifully realized, the single player remains however a little prisoner of its formula: it is on the side of multiplayer that you will have to cool off, and against all odds, that of Max Payne 3 turns out to be a little gem.

The Rockstar team has managed to revisit with great skill the work done previously by Remedy. Probably no one else would have been able to interpret in the same way the maturity and despair of an icon of other times. The gameplay, enriched by elements necessary to contextualize the product today, does not betray its origins in any way.

Max Payne 3 has everything that Max Payne lovers could want: an excellently narrated plot, an above-average longevity and an exceptional amount of content, obviously enriched by the classic gameplay based on action scenes and Bullet Time that have always distinguished the title from other productions.

Max Payne's third (and final) journey into the night just doesn't have the right to call itself worthy of its name. Max Payne 3's biggest problem, however, is the fact that, even if you can stomach the change in direction, writing, and - once strong - visual style, this simply is too repetitive for it to be any fun. The production values are insane, but they simply can't save this from being this bundle of mediocrity that it is.

I encourage you to play Max Payne 3 immediately. Take a glimpse back at a short time when Rockstar made games that were focused on gameplay first. The game has its priorities straight. Gameplay, graphics, and story, in this particular order. This game gives you all the tools to be an action hero. Do so accordingly.
