Critic Reviews for Star Hunter DX

The lack of modes and the high level of difficulty will mean that Star Hunter DX won’t be for everyone, but for ardent shoot ’em up fans it’s well worth a look, especially considering its budget price. Its Bullet Time mechanic, at least, makes this shooter stand out from the crowd, and the charming audio and visuals are the icing on the cake.

Star Hunter DX is an excellent shoot 'em up at its core with a motivating premise and thoroughly challenging gameplay. The fact that it's lacking in the content department makes me hope that a more fleshed-out sequel will arrive down the road.

Star Hunter DX is a charming and dazzling tribute to the classics of the genre. The 2-D art style is reminiscent of the old arcades paired with a nostalgic 16-bit soundtrack. Controls are responsive with a nice variety of abilities and difficulty modes to play through the campaign. However, the lack of extra modes was disappointing and weighed on the replayability. Still, if you’re looking for a colorful shmup to test your skills, look no further.

Star Hunter DX is a fantastic middle-of-the-road Shmup. Curious omissions like no online leaderboards, score attack, or training modes aren't quite justified by the existence of an Achievement list. This is still a good time, but just a little minimalistic in more ways than the art style. Unfortunately, that makes it a tougher sell than it should be.

Overall, Star Hunter DX is able to distinguish itself from its numerous peers through a focus on strong gameplay. For a small indie game, it packs a punch in content for shmup lovers. While it has few stand out moments, newcomers and veterans will be entertained by its uncompromising classic feel.

Star Hunter DX won’t win any awards for originality, Shoot ‘em ups like this are one of the oldest genres known to man. But it has a little originality in the strategy department, with lots of options to tailor the experience to your own personal style.
