Maglam Lord is a game I really want to like. It has strong aesthetics, a cute premise, and a deep weapon customization system. It’s the elements around them that I’m not that fond of. A good JRPG needs a good story to encourage you to see it through to the end, but its plot and characters are sadly not that great. The camera issues during combat also didn't help matters much. Don't get me wrong, this game isn't a poor showing and I’m sure there’s someone out there who will gel with this title and have a great time, but I can’t say I’m among them.

There is little in Magnum Lord that stands out as good or interesting. The story segments are mildly amusing, as well as a few of the characters, but the plot goes nowhere fast, and the rest of the game is hard to enjoy. Combat oscillates between two second stomps to five minute plus long slogs, all the while being far more boring than it might look. The entire other 'half' beyond the visual novel segments is laughably bad in the design and the game does little to separate itself from either better or more unique JRPGs currently out.

Maglam Lord ends up in an unusual niche. It has better production values than a budget title but doesn’t offer enough to compete with a full AAA release. This makes it a lot of fun when expectations get set appropriately. It was perfect for those days when I just wanted to punish enemies by mashing buttons, and the accompanying story was a pleasant bonus.
