Silent Hill's Art Director Is Working on a Secret New Game

on | OpenCritic

Masahiro Ito, the former art director for the Silent Hill series' best games, is working on a new project. Ito said as much on Twitter over the weekend, though he played coy by keeping out more details than that. Ito originally announced his project quite casually and mentioned that he hopes it doesn't get cancelled. It's unclear whether that means it's in danger of getting cancelled or if he's just sharing a common fear among game developers.

The artist later followed that tweet by teasing the fact that he couldn't say any more than what he's said so far. He did not specify his role on the new game, though he did say he is a "core member."

Ito's most famous work came as the art director for Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, both of which are widely regarded as the series' best games in its 13 years of history. His work on those games followed his credits on the original Silent Hill in 1999 where in he worked both as a background artist and creature designer.

While fans often clamor for a new game in the series, there's no indication that Ito's new project is linked to Silent Hill. The survival horror series has been dormant since 2012, during which time Konami published two games in the series, the console sequel Silent Hill: Downpour and the Vita exclusive Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Neither of which earned stellar marks from critics and not long after, Konami began to largely ignore the video game industry.

Today, the Japanese publisher mostly works on their popular soccer sim, PES, though they did release a post-Kojima Metal Gear project in Metal Gear Survive, a game which Ito worked on. For what it's worth, nearly his entire career has been spent at Konami, so perhaps the publisher is brewing something new.
