An explanation on why only Control's Ultimate Edition will offer a next-gen upgrade has been given.

On the official Control website, publisher 505 Games offered an explanation on why only the Ultimate Edition of Control will offer a next-gen upgrade. According to the publisher, they spent several months exploring all of their launch options for Control Ultimate Edition, and that no decision was taken lightly. There was some form of blocker for every avenue that they pursued, and every blocker meant that one group of players would be left out of the upgrade for various reasons.

"Last week, alongside information about the upcoming AWE expansion for Control, we also released information about Control Ultimate Edition - a Control package featuring The Foundation and AWE expansions, coming to current and next-gen consoles, as well as PC," 505 stated.

"We spent several months exploring all of our launch options for Control Ultimate Edition and no decision was taken lightly. While it is challenging bringing any game to next-gen platforms, we quickly realized it was even more difficult to upgrade our current user base to next-gen with full parity across platforms with our year-old game.

"Every avenue we pursued, there was some form of blocker and those blockers meant that at least one group of players ended up being left out of the upgrade for various reasons. As of today, we can't offer an upgrade to everyone, and leaving any one group out feels unfair. We understand this is not what you want to hear."

Control Ultimate Edition was announced last week. This version of the game comes with both expansions, the Expeditions end game mode, Photo mode, and all of the content that has released for the original version of the title so far. This edition of the game will release on Steam on August 27th, and digitally for the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on September 10th. A physical edition of the game will release for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at the end of the year, along with a digital version for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Finally, a physical edition of the title will release for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021. Control Ultimate Edition will cost $39.99.

Control is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game will come to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later this year.
