Late last week, during Summer Game Fest, Techland revealed that its DLC-turned full-blown game, Dying Light: The Beast, would be released on August 22. Accompanied by a rather brutal gameplay trailer, The Beast and its "much darker" version of original protagonist, Kyle Crane, represent the first Dying Light project in a couple of years.
That said, while a good portion of fans were upset that the game looks nearly indistinguishable from Dying Light 2, The Beast's developers, Techland, are treating the interstitical title as if it were Dying Light 3.

In a new interview with Insider Gaming, Tymon Smektala, the franchise director at Techland, affirmed that the game is more than just would-be DLC turned into a $60 full-priced title.
"We reset the whole development," Smektala revealed. "This is a new game. At some point, a few months ago, we basically started treating The Beast as the next entry in the Dying Light series. Maybe it doesn’t have ‘3’ in it, but for us, it is Dying Light 3."
