Pokemon Fans Heartbroken As James & Professor Oak Voice Actor Passes Away

The Pokemon world was saddened to learn of the passing of James Carter Cathcart, the voice actor who was associated with the English dub of the series, playing Gary Oak, Meowth, James, and Professor Oak.

For those who grew up in the anime boom of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, James Carter Cathcart is one of the many voices of their childhood. Outside of Pokemon, they played Weevil Underwood in Yu-Gi-Oh!, Vector the Crocodile in Sonic X, and many others.

Cathcart retired from voice acting back in 2023, after wrapping up work on the last season of the Pokemon that wrapped up Ash’s story, due to an ongoing battle with throat cancer. TMZ has reported that Cathcart passed away on July 8, 2025.
