The aim of each stage is to survive as long as possible, with ever-growing hordes of enemies constantly closing in on the player, including elite enemies that take far more punishment to bring down. The player needs to balance killing foes to level up and gain upgrades with avoiding damage, leading to a beautiful gameplay balance that many others have copied.
