Steam's PayPal Woes Are Because Of NSFW Content On The Platform, The Company Confirms

We previously reported that Steam was no longer accepting PayPal as a payment method for consumers not using the Euro, Canadian Dollar, British Pound Sterling, Japanese Yen, Australian Dollar or United States Dollar.

Steam provided an initial explanation for this development, saying PayPal's acquiring banks stopped allowing Steam transactions using most of the world's currencies. Initially, Steam did not specify why these banks had made this decision, until now.

In a statement given to Rock Paper Shotgun, Valve confirmed that these banks have stopped supporting Steam-based transactions for the same reason as Mastercard.

"[The withdrawal of support] is regarding content on Steam related to what we've previously commented on surrounding Mastercard. In this case, one of PayPal's acquiring banks decided to stop processing any Steam transactions, which cut off PayPal from Steam for a number of currencies," a Valve spokesperson said.

For those unfamiliar, a couple of weeks ago, Mastercard attempted to distance itself from a controversy which saw several Steam games de-indexed. According to Mastercard, the company did not restrict "any content on game creator sites and platforms."
