2025 has already been a huge year for games with multiple heavy hitters selling millions of copies each. Mario Kart World, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Split Fiction have all racked up huge numbers. However, none of them has managed to outsell Assassin's Creed Shadows.

That's according to data compiled by GSD and shared by The Game Business reveals that, as of July 28, 2025, Assassin's Creed Shadows has been the best-selling new game of the year in Europe. That's despite Capcom confirming Monster Hunter Wilds has sold more than ten million copies, and Mario Kart World likely having sold close to six million due to its 97 percent attach rate thanks to its Switch 2 bundle.

There's a big old asterisk next to Mario Kart World due to Nintendo not sharing digital sales numbers. It's also unclear if GSD's data includes copies that came bundled with a Switch 2.

These are also numbers based on Europe alone, of course. Despite Monster Hunter's growing popularity, it's probably safe to assume the bulk of that ten million sold were to fans of the series in Japan. Europe is still more than enough of a snapshot to be an accurate representation of...
