It very much feels like platforming mascots are dead these days, with only a handful of more modern characters keeping the genre alive. Astro Bot, Mario, Sonic, and now Donkey Kong have all managed to produce some excellent titles between them, while the likes of Kirby and Pac-Man are doing just enough to keep themselves relevant in today's gaming landscape.
Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the Western platforming mascots, as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Rayman, and Banjo-Kazooie are all either six feet under, or their graves are being dug as we speak. Bubsy was supposed to be in there with them, almost like a mascot for the dead mascot platformer, but thanks to some wild decisions at Atari, Bubsy is back in action.
During Gamescom Opening Night Live earlier this week, we saw the announcement of a brand-new Bubsy game. Titled Bubsy 4D, it looks to be a very tongue-in-cheek, satire-filled platformer that knows full well that Bubsy is responsible for various acts of crime against the childhoods of many across the globe with Bubsy 3D. However, unlike that game, this one actually looks pretty decent.
Despite the game...
