Battlefield 2042 is back in a big way, with tens of thousands of players returning to the game after the recent Battlefield 6 beta. This isn't because of some fond nostalgia for the previous entry in the series, but rather players flooding back to earn rewards for the upcoming BF6. Earn enough experience on the battle pass, and you'll get your hands on cosmetics that can be redeemed when BF6 launches in October.
Players love free stuff, so 2042 has skyrocketed to highs of over 40,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. Except...quite a lot of these players aren't actually playing the game at all.
Investigate Battlefield 2042's Portal mode and all you'll find are countless servers for farming AFK battlepass experience. Most of these servers are full of players, but more are being created all the time to cater for those who don't want to actually play the game.
The servers are exactly as you might expect: just 48 players standing completely still, passively generating experience to complete the battle pass.
