Square Enix has double-edged swords down to a science. I'm not making a joke about Serge's and Zidane's weapons in Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy 9, respectively, but if that's where your brain went on, let's connect on social media.

Anyway. Between Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles adding voice-acting, additional dialogue, and mechanical tweaks galore but ditching the War of the Lions port's extra content... between the modern ports of Final Fantasy 7 and 9 having great character models but blurry backgrounds... the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster re-releases looking sharp, sounding stellar, adding quality of life improvements, but nixing cool stuff from previous ports... yeah, I could go on - there's always something holding stuff back from being the ultimate version.

Final Fantasy 6 isn't facing this issue. Rather, the double-edged sword here is that, while many diehards have desperately hoped for an HD-2D remake in the vein of Dragon Quest 3's and Live A Live's, Square has given us a tantalizing tease of a project that may well never happen: some HD-2D FF6 rep via an Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent collaboration instead. Charming.
