Blizzard Entertainment. Inc. has officially done something that I think a great many of us saw coming from a mile away. Turtle WoW, a hyper-popular private World of Warcraft server that has courted so many people to its side, including no fewer than four of my own acquaintances, is being sued for copyright infringement. And several other things.
If this goes Blizzard's way - and I reckon it probably will - then things are about to get pretty ugly.
I first spotted this over at ResetEra, and the lawsuit looks pretty severe, with Blizzard is attacking Turtle WoW's owners from multiple approach vectors. (Even if a few just sound like hardcore-tier versions of themselves.)
For the uninitiated, Turtle WoW is a seriously expansive private World of Warcraft server that has gone heavy as heck into its own style of content. If this was an entirely different type of game - say, Skyrim or something - we'd think of it as a comprehensive overhaul mod. But this is, of course, a generation-defining colossus of an MMORPG that continues to print money for its owners over two decades past its launch.
