After nearly four years since its reveal, Biomutant has a launch date, and players won't need to wait too much longer to finally play. Experiment 101's debut title has been long-awaited but is finally set for May 25, 2021.
Biomutant was first revealed in August of 2017 and became something of a trade show darling for a few years at events such as PAX and Gamescom. Though it's just the first title from Experiment 101, the pedigree of the studio is partly what has had players excited. Headed up by Stefan Ljungqvist formerly of Avalanche, he brings his expertise in explosive action from series like Just Cause over to his new Swedish studio.
If you're unfamiliar with Biomutant, let's get you caught up with a trailer first. This official developer walkthrough offers nearly 10 minutes of gameplay, during which time you can see the customizable critter who stars in the game, presumably as the titular biomutant themself. Melee combat is interspersed with platforming and less common action sequences like piloting mech suits all in a colorful alien world whose lore we can't yet begin to understand.
Alongside the release date, THQ Nordic has revealed its now customary two kinds of collector's editions for the game. Here's what to expect in each package.
Atomic Edition:
- High Detail Diorama - 60cm/23" long, 25cm/10" width, 30cm/12" height
- Copy of the game
- Steelbook
- T-Shirt in L/XL
- Oversized Mousepad 80cm/31" x 35cm/14"
- The artwork on Fabric A1 size
- Soundtrack
- Premium Box
This Atomic Edition will run you $399.99. The price tag is obviously steep but not uncommon for the publisher, which these days offers such pricey packages for many of its premiere releases. If you don't want to invest that much but are still looking for something extra, you may instead like the Collector's Edition, which includes:
- Copy of the game
- Game hero figurine
- The artwork on Fabric A1 size
- Soundtrack
- Premium Box
In total, that middle package will go for $109.99. The base game will launch at $59.99 and is officially an Xbox One/PS4 game - in addition to PC - so it will run via backward compatibility on new-gen platforms. There's no word yet on whether the game will get an enhanced version for Xbox Series X|S and PS5.
