When Square Enix first revealed Octopath Traveler 0 during July's Nintendo Partner Direct, longtime players of the excellent series' mobile gacha game were both excited and a bit bewildered. Clearly, this is based in large part on Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. Yet, so much is different. New. Exciting. Or so it seemed.

Now, those initial impressions are receiving even richer confirmation. Indeed, Square is making it increasingly clear that Octopath Traveler 0 is no console-bound quasi-remake of Champions of the Continent; it's something more. Champions is its foundation - and a good foundation, at that - but this prequel is prepped to soar.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent stars a massive cast of gacha-recruitable party members. Octopath Traveler 0 also does... after a fashion. What Octopath Traveler 0 brings to the forefront, and it's one of the most immediately apparent ways in which it distinguishes itself as a full-fledged title in its own right, is that it sports an eight-character main cast alongside the customizable silent protagonist. Each of these characters is, at least as best as I can tell, completely new to the overarching story.
