Xbox has a history of making its own headsets to compete with the many third-party peripherals available, and with the introduction of the all-new, simply-named Xbox Wireless Headset, the brand believes it's made the best one yet. The headset will launch in 2021 and is compatible with Xboxes new and old, including the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Naturally, it will also work on PC.
The team behind the headset says because they work internally with the console team, the Xbox Wireless Headset is "introduce a fine-tuned and configurable auditory experience like no Xbox headset before."
Features include support for several of the world's foremost spatial sound technologies, such as Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone: X. “We spent a lot of time in the audio testing chambers trying to characterize and understand how the headset reproduces audio in different room environments. It goes in your living room, game room, and dorm room and we want it to sound the best for all types of audio.” said Erik Garcia, Project Architect and Lead. “In the same way, the team studied gameplay to ensure great sounding chat with a sensitive mic to prevent background noise.”
Improved voice isolation technology means the mic should filter out background noise better than past headsets. It also includes an auto-mute feature for when you're not talking, though it can be toggled on or off for players who prefer to manually mute themselves.
The Xbox Wireless headset will connect via Bluetooth to several devices at once, allowing players to move between gaming and things like phone calls. With the Xbox Accessories app on consoles and PC, you can customize your settings in a way third-party mics don't usually allow for, including equalizer settings, bass boost, auto-mute sensitivity, mic monitoring, and brightness of the mic’s mute light.
The mic will hit stores on March 16 and is available for pre-order for $99 starting today at select retailers.
