Celebrating Gaming's Greatest And Creepiest Easter Egg, Almost 30 Years Later

In the big year of 2025, Hideo Kojima is world-renowned as one of the most creative people working in video games. He’s the visionary behind Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding, and the upcoming horror experience OD, not to mention a huge number of hilariously cryptic posts on social media.

As Spooktober approaches yet again, I think it's a great time to remember one of the best and creepiest easter eggs in gaming.

Back in the late 1990s, I knew nothing of Kojima’s genius. What I did know was that, when starting new game plus in Metal Gear Solid with the camera in my inventory from the beginning, my first priority was to snap a shot of the guard sleeping standing up in a corner of the Heliport.

For whatever reason, I thought that would be hilarious, but instead, it absolutely blew my young mind. This is a PS1 bucket list game if ever there was one.

On doing so, and then taking a look back at the photo in the menu screen, I was greeted with the above image, a ‘ghost’ superimposed over the in-game shot. I think I actually screamed out loud.
