Payday Studio Cancels D&D Game To Focus On The "Heisting Genre", Because That's Apparently A Thing

Payday 3 unfortunately wasn't the smash and grab hit that Starbreeze hoped it would be. Things already looked shaky at launch when fans started cancelling pre-orders after it was revealed that the game would be always online. The launch was followed by matchmaking issues and a lack of content, which saw it get Mostly Negative reviews and the exit of CEO Tobias Sjögren.

Things started to look up for the game after a few updates, and Starbreeze even landed a Dungeons & Dragons game with Wizards of the Coast, which was sure to attract attention after the success of Baldur's Gate 3. However, it seems that's come to an end, as the studio has announced the cancellation of Project Baxter, in favour of making Payday the "leader in the heisting genre."

According to a statement by the studio, following an internal review, the board of directors decided that Project Baxter will be cancelled, and all resources working on it will be redirected to the Payday team.
