One of the more common industry jokes is the file size of Call of Duty games. To be fair, they were indeed notoriously large, but credit where credit is due: Activision has found a way to shrink the file size leading into Black Ops 7.
Helldivers 2's PC file size, a whopping 150 GB, puts it to shame. It's something that Arrowhead is fully aware of, as they kick off a new tech blog update by immediately addressing the elephant in the room.
That begs the question: why is it so much bigger on PC? Well, there are a couple of reasons.
First, Arrowhead explains that "much of the data in the PC version of Helldivers 2 is duplicated." This is a practice that helps reduce loading times to optimize games for older storage media, such as optical disc drives like DVDs and, more notably, Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). The latter is the biggest issue here, but Arrowhead believes they've found a solution.
