Octopath Traveler 0 is a dramatically altered reimagining of the HD-2D series' mobile gacha spinoff, Champions of the Continent. So much has shifted, and so much more has been added, that everything we've seen suggests a full-fledged title with the premium price point one would expect from such a venture.
With the game's December 4 launch date steadily approaching, the devs have been increasingly chatty, fielding questions concerning its placement within the chronology and whether it plays nicely with established canon. The answer is, well... it's up to you.
For those who aren't in the know, Octopath Traveler 0 takes place on the same continent as Octopath Traveler (1) did: Orsterra. It inherits this (and so much else) from its source material, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent; and, whereas it's easier to anticipate potential timeline divergences for a long-running gacha installment, expectations might be a bit shifted for OT0 by contrast.
